Influenza
Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract which includes the nose, throat & lungs. Influenza usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms. Some common symptoms with flu are sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough.
The majority of flu cases can be treated with over-the-counter medication, rest, and re-hydration. If your child begins to experience respiratory distress or dehydration, contact your pediatrician immediately.
How to Prevent Flu
Please keep in mind the following preventive measures to help stop the spread of flu
- Wash your hands with soap and water! Frequent hand washing will help protect you from germs.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of dirty tissues appropriately.
- Stay home if you have a fever or a cough.
- Avoid contact with other people who are sick.
- Clean common household surfaces often - refrigerator door, faucet handles, etc… and especially those that young children come into contact with.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
