Drinking Sensibly
What you need to know
If you are thinking of drinking alcohol you need to be aware of what effects it can have on you so you are able to stay safe whilst you are out enjoying yourself.
Alcohol quickly gets into your bloodstream so the effects can be almost immediate, but it can take hours to wear off depending on your size, weight, what you are drinking, how strong it is and how much you drink.
Drinking too much alcohol can change your behaviour, make you vulnerable to personal harm and crime and cause health problems. Over time you may become dependant on alcohol.
What you can do
NEVER leave your drink unattended and if you do, never go back to it.
If someone offers to buy you a drink make sure you go with them to the bar and watch them buy it. Don't accept an offered drink from someone if they already have it in their hand.
Always keep an eye on your drink and never mix your drinks with drugs or medication you are taking.
Try not to mix your drinks and always know what the alcohol content is.
If you begin to feel really drunk after just a couple of drinks - get help from a friend or staff in the bar or club.
If you meet someone you like, think carefully before agreeing to go outside with them - always make sure a friend knows where you are.
