Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made by the clinical features, characteristic changes in the spinal fluid (from a lumbar puncture [spinal tap]), and electrical studies of the peripheral nerves and muscles, a procedure known as electromyography. The diagnosis reflects an elimination of other possibilities.
